The Fighting Irish

Updated: May 20, 2020

Over three hundred enthusiastic runners, and walkers, lined the streets of Denton Avenue, to participate in the 42nd Annual New Hyde Park-Mineola, 8 K race today.

The course is fast and challenging. It has a number of twists and turns along the course. You are required to go up and down hills. It is quite competitive but definitely fun. To run to the finish line, you cross the green of the Denton Avenue Elementary School.

Great raffles followed, with big-ticket item giveaways; a TV, A fit-bit, lap-top, store gift certificates, and more. All finishers received a "huge" medal. There were cash prizes for

Male and Female Overall, Masters (40+) and Senior Grand Masters (60+). The top three Male and Female winners, also received a cash bonus. Trophies were given to the top three deep, in each age group. There was a good representation of each category.

The Irish are on TOP!

There were many volunteers on the route, including the boy scouts handing out much-needed water on a hot, humid day. More volunteers lined the course to direct the participants. Others handed out water, sliced watermelon, cut oranges, bananas, bagels, and pastries after the race. Local businesses had tables with free giveaways.

A great day was had by all!

The "Fighting Irish" finished strong!

Yes, really, Ita from County Cavan, on the left in the picture, finished second in the 50-54 age division, in a time of 38:21. And "G" from County Dublin, finished in a time of 37:02 at the top of the same division.

Did you notice we are both wearing the same running shoes?

Maybe that had something to do with it!
